Infrastructure

Exchange Rate API is built entirely on Cloudflare Workers, a serverless edge compute platform that runs your requests on the nearest node in a network spanning over 300 cities across 100+ countries. There are no origin servers to bottleneck, no cold starts to wait for, and no single points of failure.

Edge-First Architecture

Every API request is handled at the Cloudflare edge location closest to the caller. There is no round-trip to a centralized origin server, which is why median response times stay below 50ms globally.

Always-Warm Compute

Cloudflare Workers have zero cold starts. Unlike traditional serverless platforms (Lambda, Cloud Functions), your first request is just as fast as your millionth.

Automatic Failover

If any edge location experiences issues, requests are automatically rerouted to the next nearest healthy node. This happens transparently with no action needed from you.

Global Data Replication

Exchange rate data is replicated across the entire edge network. Every node has a fresh copy of current rates, eliminating any single point of failure for data access.

Monitoring

We use Better Stack (formerly Better Uptime) for continuous external monitoring of all API endpoints. Checks run every 30 seconds from multiple global locations, and our team is alerted within seconds of any anomaly.

You can also check our internal status page at /status/ for a quick overview of current system health.

DDoS Protection

Running on Cloudflare gives us access to one of the world's largest DDoS mitigation networks. Attacks are absorbed at the edge before they can reach our application logic.

SSL/TLS Encryption

All communication with the Exchange Rate API is encrypted in transit. We enforce HTTPS on every endpoint with no option to downgrade to plaintext HTTP.

Historical Uptime

Our target is 99.9% uptime (approximately 8.7 hours of allowed downtime per year). In practice, we consistently exceed this target.

For real-time and historical uptime data, visit our public status page at exchange-rateapi.betteruptime.com. It shows uptime percentages, response times, and incident history going back 90 days.

Our edge-first architecture means that most "downtime" scenarios that affect traditional APIs — origin server crashes, database failovers, regional outages — simply do not apply to our infrastructure. If one edge location goes down, traffic is rerouted automatically with no service interruption.
